Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung hosted a luncheon July 9 in Taipei City for a cross-party delegation of Panamanian lawmakers led by Orlando Carrasquilla, chair of the National Assembly’s Agriculture and Fisheries Committee, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.

According to Lin, three delegations of Panamanian lawmakers have visited Taiwan in recent months. Current group members Roberto Zúñiga and Luis Duke joined the Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China in 2025, and they have shown support for Taiwan by issuing a statement refuting China’s misinterpretation of U.N. General Assembly Resolution 2758, he said.

Taiwan and Panama have high potential for cooperation given Taiwan’s leading position in artificial intelligence technology, semiconductors and democratic supply chains and the Panama Canal’s critical role in global shipping, Lin said. He anticipated that group members will continue to support friendly bilateral interactions and pledged that the government will foster two-way ties based on the principles of pragmatism, openness and mutual benefit.

In response, Carrasquilla said that Taiwan’s achievements in areas spanning the economy, medical care, technology and trade are worth learning from. He added that he will continue urging Panama’s executive branch to recognize Taiwan’s importance and advance relations between the two sides.

Zúñiga said that Taiwan is Panama’s second-largest export market and the leading Asian source of foreign direct investment in the Latin American country. The two countries share the values of freedom, democracy and free markets, he noted, adding that he hoped the visit would open a new chapter in bilateral friendship.

The delegation members exchanged views with representatives of Taiwanese seafood importers and shipping companies on bilateral trade and future areas of cooperation and thanked Taiwan for its long-standing support of agricultural and educational cooperation projects in Panama, the MOFA said. All participants welcomed continued efforts to deepen economic and trade ties, expand investment and build a more comprehensive and mutually beneficial partnership, the ministry added. (YCH-E)
