Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung received Jamie Fly, CEO of the U.S.-based nongovernmental organization Freedom House, Aug. 7 in Taipei City, to exchange opinions on democratic development, human rights cooperation and the challenge posed by authoritarian expansion for Taiwan and the global community.
Lin praised the organization’s long-standing efforts to advance global freedom and democratic governance by issuing reports and conducting research on transnational repression. He said that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is presently working to establish a center for international nongovernmental organizations to shape Taiwan into a key hub for INGOs in the Indio-Pacific.
The minister added that he hopes to deepen cooperation with human rights organizations, such as Freedom House, to jointly strengthen democratic resilience.
Fly commended Taiwan’s contributions to democracy and human rights protection, noting that Taiwan ranked second in Asia in his organization’s Freedom in the World report this year. The CEO added that he looks forward to establishing a closer partnership with Taiwan to enhance regional democratic development.
According to the MOFA, Freedom House was established in 1941 and first issued its annual Freedom in the World report in 1973. Taiwan has ranked as a “free” country in the report for nearly 30 consecutive years, the ministry said, adding that the government and civil society of Taiwan further received the organization’s inaugural Beacon Award last year.
