Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung received a French Senate delegation led by Vice President Didier Mandelli April 20 in Taipei City to discuss the two-way ties and future cooperation.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the six-member group also included Thani Mohamed Soilihi, Louis-Jean de Nicolay, Brigitte Devésa, Else Joseph and Patrick Chaize.

Lin thanked the French government and parliament for their long-standing support for Taiwan. He cited as an example the joint statement issued by French President Emmanuel Macron and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi after their meeting earlier this month which stressed the importance of peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait.

The minister said the two sides have significant potential for further cooperation and anticipated that Taiwan would become an indispensable partner to France in strategic autonomy and reindustrialization goals.

Deputy Minister François Chihchung Wu hosted a luncheon for the group the same day. He noted that Taiwan’s key role in the global semiconductor supply chain and shipping routes meant that maintaining cross-strait peace and stability is in the best interests of all parties.

In response, Mandelli said amidst dramatic geopolitical shifts, the French visit underscores the long-standing support for Taiwan from the country’s government and senate. He looked forward to further deepening his knowledge of Taiwan, especially in the digital, energy and technology sectors.

The delegation met with Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim April 21. The VP said Taiwan and France share the same values of freedom and democracy and added that she was deeply moved by the strong support from the French Senate’s Taiwan Friendship Group. (SFC-E)
