Minister of Foreign Affairs Lin Chia-lung welcomed Amb. Gaafar J. Uherbelau of Palau Sept. 9 in Taipei City and congratulated him on his new assignment to Taiwan.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Uherbelau presented a copy of his credentials to Lin at the meeting. The new ambassador submitted the original to President Lai Ching-te during an audience the same day at the Presidential Office.
Lin recalled his recent visit heading a delegation to the ally and expressed appreciation to President Surangel S. Whipps Jr. and the people of Palau for their hospitality, as well as to the new ambassador for his assistance to the Taiwan delegation during the Pacific Islands Forum.
During his tenure as head of the Palauan Ministry of Health and Human Services, Uherbelau supported Taiwan’s participation in international organizations and events such as the World Health Assembly, Lin said, adding that he anticipated the ambassador would continue to promote Taiwan-Palau ties in his new role.
In response, Uherbelau said he is deeply honored to serve as resident ambassador to Taiwan for his country. He added that the forum provided a great opportunity to highlight the increasingly robust bilateral ties and the successes of various bilateral cooperative projects implemented under Taiwan’s Diplomatic Allies Prosperity Project.
The MOFA said the two officials discussed a wide range of issues during the meeting, including energy transition, sustainable development, medicine and healthcare, talent cultivation, tourism, and trade and investment.
In line with its integrated diplomacy approach, the Taiwanese government will continue to work with Palau and other Pacific partners to promote regional peace, stability and prosperity and build a more sustainable, resilient and prosperous Blue Pacific, the ministry added. (SFC-E)
