Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung hosted a luncheon for a delegation led by Tuvalu Minister of Foreign Affairs, Labor and Trade Paulson Panapa Sept. 14 in Taipei City to discuss issues of mutual interest.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the five-member group was received by Vice Foreign Minister Ger Bau-shuan upon its Sept. 13 arrival at Taoyuan International Airport for a five-day visit.
At the luncheon, Lin said the two allies support each other like family and are expanding cooperation across a wide range of mutually beneficial areas, citing cooperative agreements on labor issues, double taxation avoidance and tax evasion, and uncrewed aerial vehicle development.
The minister said the two countries are also working to develop a new cooperative mechanism under the MOFA’s Diplomatic Allies Prosperity Project in line with the government’s integrated diplomacy strategy. This new endeavor will help enhance Tuvalu’s resilience against climate change and extreme weather events while promoting sustainable development and prosperity for both sides, he added.
Equally important, Lin said the two sides are stepping up efforts to promote milkfish cultivation in Tuvalu in order to enhance food security and the well-being of its people.
In response, Panapa thanked the government of Taiwan for its unwavering support of Tuvalu’s national development. Given the escalating threat of rising sea levels and extreme weather, Tuvalu must keep strengthening its climate adaptation and sustainability, he said, expressing hope of seeing the two allies deepen cooperation in these particular areas.
