Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung met with Guatemalan Minister of Public Health and Social Assistance Joaquín Barnoya and Vice Minister Edgar Rolando González June 29 in Taipei City, with the two sides exchanging views on bilateral health and medical care cooperation and future projects.
 
Lin welcomed the officials to Taiwan to attend the International Cooperation and Development Fund’s (TaiwanICDF) 30th anniversary celebrations. Taiwan and Guatemala enjoy the fruitful results of long-standing public health and medical care collaboration, he said, citing the ongoing cancer hospital construction and the Breast Cancer Control System Strengthening Project in the Central American ally.
 
The minister also thanked Barnoya for speaking up for Taiwan’s participation in the World Health Organization and other international mechanisms at the World Health Assembly in May.
 
In response, Barnoya expressed appreciation for Taiwan’s long-standing medical infrastructure, health capacity and staff training assistance. He also conveyed gratitude from Guatemalan President Bernardo Arévalo for Taiwan’s support of Guatemala’s health system development.
 
Deputy Foreign Minister Chen Ming-chi hosted a banquet for the minister and vice minister later the same day. He said during the event that Taiwan and Guatemala are reliable partners that have achieved remarkable results through cooperation in areas spanning agricultural development, education, infrastructure, public health and women’s empowerment.
 
Deputy Health Minister Lin Ching-yi and high-profile staff from TaiwanICDF and Medical Excellence TAIWAN also attended the event to exchange opinions on cancer care, medical personnel training and future cooperation directions.
 
According to the MOFA, during their stay through July 4, the Guatemalan guests will visit the Ministry of Health and Welfare, Taiwan Centers for Disease Control and National Health Insurance Administration, as well as facilities and cultural sites such as the Taipei Metro Operations Control Center and Tamkang Bridge.
