President Lai Ching-te accompanied by Minister of Defense Wellington Li-hsiung Koo and National Security Council Secretary-General Jau-shieh Joseph Wu attended the commissioning ceremony for a naval defense vessel July 24 in Kaohsiung City. ROCS Tan Chiang is the first in a second batch of Tuo Chiang class vessels, with a total of twelve are scheduled for delivery in December this year, the Presidential Office said.
Lai stated that the commissioning into active service signified that Taiwan has produced indigenous naval vessels to safeguard marine territory and protect the nation. The country’s national security policy of upgrading defense to maintain peace includes production of indigenous defense planes and development of the drone industry.
This year marked the 30th anniversary of direct presidential elections, Lai noted, adding that in 1996 ROC Taiwan Armed Forces upheld national security enabling the country to cast votes in its first democratic presidential election. (POC-E)
