MOC event spotlights Taiwan’s Indigenous literature

The Ministry of Culture’s office in Sydney is staging a tour May 7-9 to Sydney, Canberra and Melbourne featuring literature promoter Paelabang Danapan to discuss Taiwan’s Indigenous literature.

Born in 1953 and a member of the Puyuma tribe, Paelabang Danapan holds a master’s degree in Sinology from KU Leuven in Belgium. He has taught at several universities in Taiwan and served as minister of the Council of Indigenous Peoples from 2009 to 2013.

In 1993 he founded Mountain Sea Culture Magazine, the first publication in Taiwan dedicated to Indigenous literature and culture. Two years later, he launched the Mountain Sea Literature Awards—the first literary prize in the country specifically for Indigenous writers.

According to the ministry, the event will see the academic examining the significance of both written and spoken Indigenous languages in Taiwan and how these forms of expression have shaped and preserved stories, tradition and identity.

The MOC said the event goes beyond promoting literature, as it is a celebration of Taiwan’s cultural diversity and opens up new worlds and perspectives for Australian audiences to explore.

The conversation is part of Taiwanese Bookshelves, a collaborative initiative between the MOC and the organizers of the Taiwan Film Festival in Australia. Held since 2021, the touring event introduces contemporary Taiwan literature and strengthens connections to the Australian film industry. (SFC-E)
