A delegation from the U.S. state of Arizona was received by the Ministry of Economic Affairs’ Small and Medium Enterprise and Startup Administration and Kaohsiung City Government’s Economic Development Bureau May 31 at the Startup Terrace Kaohsiung, according to the MOEA.

Led by Sandra Watson, president and CEO of Arizona Commerce Authority, the delegation includes officials from the governments of the state and city of Tucson, as well as representatives from the University of Arizona and local chambers of commerce. The exchange focused on startups, technology applications and industrial chain cooperation, aiming to help startups and small- and medium-sized enterprises in southern Taiwan to expand their U.S. market penetration, the MOEA said.

The administration’s Director General G. J. Lee said that the visit demonstrates the great importance the state attaches to deepening cooperation with Taiwan’s innovation ecosystem and industries. He added that the Startup Terrace Kaohsiung is a key venue for the local government to advance the development of fifth-generation technology, Artificial Intelligence of Things, smart manufacturing, biotechnology, and energy and transportation technologies, as well as a crucial arena for Taiwanese startups to connect with the global market and expand their international cooperation.

Watson said that Arizona is transforming from a semiconductor center to an AI infrastructure hub. The state economy has been boosted by years of cooperation with Taiwan, she noted, adding that, in addition to semiconductors, the two sides will continue to strengthen collaboration in AI infrastructure and related technologies.

According to the MOEA, the delegation will also attend the 2026 COMPUTEX InnoVEX event June 2-5 in Taipei City for business matching.

Launched by the SMESA in 2018 in New Taipei City’s Linkou District and Kaohsiung’s Qianzhen District, the two clusters of the Startup Terrace offer one-stop cultivation resources, office space, market-entering opportunities and a smart technology testing environment. The administration said it will continue to help Taiwanese startups connect with the world while facilitating the establishment of U.S. startup branches in southern Taiwan. (YCH-E)
