An economic and trade delegation led by Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung to Italy June 23-26 has demonstrated the spirit of Taiwan’s integrated diplomacy initiative and deepened bilateral relations, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said June 27.

During his trip, Lin attended a meeting on strengthening supply chain resilience and a bilateral business exchange event held by the Regional Council of Lombardy June 25 in Milan. He hosted a banquet later the same day, which was attended by around 50 Italian political figures and business representatives, including Marcello Maria Ventura, chair of the council’s Committee on Production Activities, Education, Training and Employment; Ivan Rota, chair of the council’s Taiwan friendship group; and Giuseppe Pasini, president of local entrepreneurial federation Confindustria Lombardia.

The minister first thanked the Italian government and parliament for supporting cross-strait peace and stability and Taiwan’s international participation. He emphasized that fostering mutual cultural understanding plays a key role in connecting the people of Taiwan and Italy, adding that Taiwan will continue to strengthen two-way ties in areas spanning culture, industry and innovation.

In response, Rota praised the increasingly close exchanges between Taiwan and Italy and said he looks forward to more bilateral cooperation across the aboard.

Lin also visited Taiwanese businesses operating in Italy, including MEMC Electronic Materials S.p.A., HIWIN Italy, and NHOA Energy, a subsidiary of Taiwan Cement Corp.

According to the MOFA, the minister visited the Violin Museum in Cremona June 24. He expressed hope of more collaboration opportunities between the museum and Taiwan following the loan of 22 string instruments to the facility by Tainan City-based Chimei Museum in 2013.

The government will continue to work with like-minded partners to strengthen democratic resilience and expand cooperation with Europe across the board through cultural, economic and values-based diplomacy, the ministry added. (YCH-E)
