Taiwan’s Global Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Academy and the Japan Drone Consortium concluded a letter of intent July 17 in Tokyo to expand cooperation in non-red drone supply chain development.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the GUAVA was established earlier this year as part of drone diplomacy, proposed by Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung in alignment with President Lai Ching-te’s Five Trusted Industry Sectors initiative and the integrated diplomacy.
The LOI was signed by Chiang Zhen-wei, CEO of the MOFA’s drone diplomacy task force, and JDC Chair Kenzo Nonami following the International Drone Expo that took place July 15-17 in the Japanese capital. Chiang made a speech at the expo underlining the local industry’s strengths and government policy.
At the LOI signing, Chiang said that Taiwan’s exceptional manufacturing, information telecommunications technology and supply chain resilience have given rise to a complete drone ecosystem of over 300 firms.
The MOFA and GUAVA are committed to working with first island chain partner countries like Japan to promote non-red supply chain development and certification, training and capacity building, events and competitions, to enhance Taiwan’s influence on the global UAV sector, the CEO added.
Nonami stated that both Taiwan and Japan face the challenges of global authoritarian expansionism, so that a secure and reliable UAV system with strong information security protection is a core national security issue.
The speed and scale of Taiwan’s drone development and the sector’s resilience are impressive, Nomani said, adding that the JDC looks forward to working with Taiwan to build a robust regional democratic supply chain under the LOI. (SFC-E)
