A forum on the enhancement of the Taiwan-Europe partnership in artificial intelligence and drone technologies to build a secure, transparent and resilient democratic supply chain took place Oct. 27 in Taipei City.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the “Trusted Technology Forum for Democracies: Connecting Taiwan and Europe through AI and Drone Technologies” was jointly organized with the Formosa Club.
Deputy Foreign Minister François Chih-chung Wu said in opening remarks that Taiwan and Europe are inseparable when it comes to security and prosperity, adding that both sides must work together to reduce single-source dependency and convert their shared values into concrete cooperation.
In the face of coercion from authoritarian regimes on the technological and supply chain fronts, Taiwan needs to leverage its advantages in semiconductors, AI servers and drone technologies and combine them with Europe’s strong industrial base and world-class research capabilities to ensure the economic security and high-tech autonomy of democratic countries, he added.
Wu said as global supply chains shift their focus from “made in Taiwan” to “make with Taiwan,” Taiwan remains committed to working with like-minded countries for mutual prosperity.
Rihards Kols, vice chair of the European Parliament-Taiwan Friendship Group and acting chair of this year’s Formosa Club conference, said Taiwan and Europe hold democratic ideals in common and have the right to make their own decisions without interference and threats from others.
Given their respective strengths, expanding cooperation between Taiwan and Europe is in the best interests of both, Kols said. He also urged the attending parliamentarians to continue supporting closer cooperation with Taiwan on critical technologies to promote secure and reliable supply chains and ensure mutual sustainable economic prosperity.
