MOFA praises successful visit of Eswatini Foreign Minister Shakantu

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Feb. 5 the recent visit by Eswatini Foreign Minister Pholile Shakantu has further cemented the robust diplomatic relationship between Taiwan and the African ally.

According to the MOFA, during Shakantu’s five-day stay in Taiwan, she met with President Tsai Ing-wen and Vice President Lai Ching-te, and signed a joint declaration with Foreign Minister Jaushieh Joseph Wu reaffirming close ties and pledging to continue two-way cooperation.

She also visited Deputy Digital Minister Yeh Ning and TaiwanPlus, the international streaming platform overseen by the Ministry of Culture, to discuss ways to expand cooperation on promoting digital development, ensuring information security and countering disinformation.

Other highlights of her itinerary included calls on several local firms to explore new business opportunities for both countries, as well as visits to cultural sites to better understand Taiwan’s Indigenous heritage, the MOFA said.

The MOFA said Shakantu reaffirmed her country’s unwavering support for Taiwan and expressed gratitude to the government for implementing projects to facilitate Eswatini’s economic and social development. Her visit underscored the 55 years of friendship between the two nations, which is sincerely appreciated by the government and people of Taiwan, it added.

Since establishing official relations in 1968, Taiwan and Eswatini have successfully implemented collaborative projects improving education, rural electrification, medical care and women’s empowerment in the kingdom, according to the ministry. (SFC-E)
