The Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement July 12 reaffirming that Taiwan sovereignty claims and policies on South China Sea islands remain unchanged.
According to the MOFA, Taiwan adheres to four South China Sea principles: Taiwan should also be included in multilateral dispute settlement mechanisms in regard to the South China Sea; These should be resolved peacefully in accordance with international law and international marine laws, including the U.N. Convention on the Law of the Sea; Other countries have an obligation to safeguard freedom of navigation and overflight in the South China Sea; and Taiwan advocates addressing disputes through the principles of setting aside differences and promoting joint development. Taiwan is willing to work with other nations to advance regional peace and stability, as well as to protect and develop South China Sea resources through negotiations based on equality.
Taiwan will continue to actively work to uphold the values of peace, humanitarianism, ecology, sustainability and prosperity in the region through actions such as protection of fishing rights, participation in multilateral consultation, scientific collaboration, providing humanitarian assistance and encouraging research on the law of the sea, the MOFA said.
The ministry reiterated that Taiwan must not be excluded from any discussions concerning its rights and interests or the norms of conduct in the region so as to ensure the legitimacy of such discussions. It added that using Taiping Island as a base, Taiwan promotes maritime cooperation, environmental conservation, humanitarian assistance and scientific research, demonstrating a commitment to regional peace and joint development.
MOFA opposes any unilateral expansionism, gray-zone coercion, militarization or other behavior that undermines peace in the South China Sea. It calls on all relevant parties to strictly abide by international law and honor the principle of peaceful dispute settlement, adding that Taiwan will continue to work with like-minded countries and regional partners to jointly uphold peace and stability in the South China Sea while ensuring a free and open international order.
