The staunch support recently expressed by Taiwan’s Latin American and Caribbean allies and the European Formosa Club in response to Nauru’s decision to break ties with Taiwan is sincerely appreciated by the government and people, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Jan. 17.
According to the MOFA, during Foreign Minister Jaushieh Joseph Wu’s Jan. 12-17 visit to Guatemala for the Central American ally’s presidential inauguration, President Bernardo Arevalo stressed that his administration will maintain its diplomatic relationship with Taiwan and looks forward to expanding cooperation.
St. Vincent and the Grenadines Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves, St. Lucia PM Philip J. Pierre and St. Kitts and Nevis PM Terrance Drew also reiterated their support for two-way ties through various channels, as did the foreign ministries of Paraguay, Haiti and Belize.
In a statement released Jan. 16, the co-chairs of the European Formosa Club extended their congratulations on Taiwan’s successful democratic election, expressed regret over Nauru’s decision and condemned China’s intimidation and interference.
The statement said the timing of Nauru’s announcement poses a direct challenge to regional stability and international order, urging the international community to remain vigilant against authoritarian expansion and assess the negative impact it has on global partnerships. The club commended the courage and unwavering commitment to upholding democracy of Taiwan’s people as they stand on the front line in the fight against authoritarianism.
The MOFA said China’s tactics will not affect the people’s dedication to freedom and democracy, adding that the government will continue to deepen cooperation with allies and like-minded partners to safeguard peace, prosperity and stability in the region and around the world. (SFC-E)
