MOFA thanks Brazil for show of solidarity following Taiwan earthquake

The passage of a resolution conveying condolences and solidarity following Taiwan’s recent earthquake by the Brazilian Chamber of Deputies’ Committee on Foreign Affairs and National Defense is sincerely welcomed by the government and people, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs April 26.

According to the MOFA, the resolution was proposed by Deputy Rodrigo Valadares, who briefed the chamber on the disaster and conveyed his sympathies.

Valadares took the opportunity to express hope that the two sides would continue to deepen bilateral exchanges in culture, economy, trade and other areas, adding that Taiwan is Brazil’s 18th-largest trade partner.

In a statement on the resolution’s passage, the chamber expressed the Brazilian National Congress’ concern over the temblor, which was the strongest to occur in Taiwan since the devastating 1999 earthquake.

The resolution follows NT$320,000 (US$9,840) in relief funds donated by the body’s Taiwan friendship group to a special account set up by the Taiwan Foundation for Disaster Relief under the Ministry of Health and Welfare, the MOFA said, adding that the group’s chair, Deputy Junio Amaral, sent his condolences on social media platform X immediately after the quake.

Taiwan and Brazil share the values of freedom, democracy and respect for human rights and the rule of law, the ministry said. Goodwill between the two sides is expected to continue to grow, laying a firm foundation for mutual assistance and support in the international community, it added. (POC-E)
