The Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed its sincere appreciation Jan. 18 for a resolution urging the European Union to deepen economic and trade cooperation with Taiwan.
According to the MOFA, in a report entitled “Security and Defence Implications of China’s Influence on Critical Infrastructure in the European Union,” the European Parliament voices its escalating concern regarding the threat China poses for Taiwan and the South China Sea while reaffirming its long-standing backing of stronger economic collaboration with Taiwan.
The report adds that China’s tendency to weaponize its control over the global supply of rare earth elements puts Europe’s defense industry and economic security at risk. With the passage of the European Chips Act, the EP calls for the European Commission and EU member states to collaborate with like-minded partners to cultivate secure supply chains for semiconductors and key parts and materials for infrastructure projects, thereby reducing the EU’s reliance on China.
The document also makes a special mention of the crucial role Taiwan plays in global supply chains and the international rules-based order and promotes the signing of an EU-Taiwan Bilateral Investment Agreement or other arrangement that would boost two-way trade and investment relations, the MOFA added.
The ministry said Taiwan is a reliable partner and vowed to continue expanding bilateral cooperation with the EU across the board to co-create resilient global supply chains among countries who share democratic values. (POC-E)
