A joint statement released by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk following their April 15 summit in Tokyo that voiced support for cross-strait peace and stability is deeply appreciated by Taiwan’s people and government, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

In the statement, both leaders underscored the need for a free and open Indo-Pacific, reaffirmed the importance of peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait and encouraged the peaceful resolution of cross-strait issues through constructive dialogue.

The prime ministers firmly opposed any unilateral attempts to change the status quo by force or coercion and any actions contrary to international law, particularly the U.N. Convention on the Law of the Sea, whether in the Euro-Atlantic, Indo-Pacific or other regions of the world. They recognized that the security of the two regions is inseparable and stated their determination to actively strengthen engagement in relevant international and regional security organizations, as well as to deepen close cooperation with like-minded partners.

In response, the MOFA said that this marks the first time Japan and Poland have expressed the importance of the Taiwan Strait in a joint statement, adding that the ministry welcomes more support from the international community for cross-strait peace and stability.

Given its key role in Indo-Pacific security and prosperity, Taiwan will continue to advance its integrated diplomacy initiative, strengthen its self-defense capabilities and deepen collaboration with like-minded partners to jointly safeguard the rules-based international order, the MOFA said.
