The Oct. 30 statement by the U.S. Department of State reaffirming the importance of maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait is sincerely welcomed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
According to the MOFA, the statement followed the trilateral gathering of U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Japanese Minister for Foreign Affairs Toshimitsu Motegi and South Korean Minister of Foreign Affairs Cho Hyun on the sidelines of the G20 foreign ministers’ meeting in the U.S. city of Atlanta.
The statement said that during the meeting, Rubio raised concerns regarding China’s efforts to assert control over the South China Sea, its coercive behavior in the East China Sea and Yellow Sea, and Russia-China cooperation undermining peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific.
Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung expressed appreciation to the three countries and encouraged partner nations to continue taking concrete action to safeguard peace and stability in the region.
The MOFA said the three countries’ foreign ministers have publicly reiterated the importance of cross-strait peace and stability on numerous occasions this year, demonstrating that the security of the Taiwan Strait is critical to regional stability and has become a high-priority issue for the international community.
Facing escalating military threats and grey-zone tactics by China, the MOFA said Taiwan will continue to expand cooperation with the U.S. and other like-minded countries to jointly ensure peace, stability and prosperity across the Taiwan Strait and in the Indo-Pacific. (SFC-E)
