MOFA thanks US State Department for support of cross-strait peace

The unwavering support for peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait recently expressed by the U.S. State Department is sincerely appreciated by the government and people of Taiwan, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said March 18.

The U.S. has noted China’s provocations in the region, the State Department said, calling them a unilateral attempt to change the status quo. Maintaining peace and stability in the strait is in the long-term interests of the U.S. and key to global security and prosperity, it said, adding that Washington hopes to see dialogue and a peaceful resolution to cross-strait differences.

According to the MOFA, the State Department made the remarks March 16 in response to a request from a Taiwan media outlet regarding China Coast Guard’s recent intrusion into the restricted waters surrounding Taiwan’s outlying county of Kinmen.

Beijing continues to ramp up pressure on Taiwan through gray zone tactics, the ministry said, adding that such attempts to disrupt the rules-based international order have raised concerns within the global community and posed serious challenges to regional security. The MOFA welcomes attention from all parties with an interest in regional development, including the public comments and support expressed by Washington in various international contexts.

Taiwan remains committed to its responsibilities as a member of the global community, the ministry said. The government will continue to work with the U.S. and all other like-minded partners to ensure peace, stability and prosperity in the region, it added. (SFC-E)
