The Ministry of Foreign Affairs June 25 thanked U.S. government agencies for sending letters to encourage states and major businesses to expand engagement with Taiwan.

According to the MOFA, the U.S. Departments of Agriculture, Commerce and State issued a joint letter June 16 to state governors informing them that expanding relations with Taiwan is fully consistent with U.S. policy and can benefit individual states.

The letter to governors states that Taiwan plays a key role in the international trading systems and is the country’s fourth-largest overall trading partner and seventh-largest market for agricultural exports. It also encourages engagement with Taiwan in areas such as disaster preparedness and whole-of-society resilience.

The letter to CEOs and business leaders states that Taiwan is a global leader in the digital economy and advanced manufacturing and contributes significantly to prosperity in the U.S. and other economies. It adds that the departments encourage cooperation with Taiwan and stand ready to help address any issues that may arise.

The letters also note that Chinese embassies and consulates regularly contact local governments and private businesses to discourage engagement with Taiwan. The agencies encourage recipients to contact the Department of State if they experience pressure from China.

Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung said Taiwan possesses major strengths in trade and the economy, culture and education, tourism, disaster prevention, and whole-of-society resilience. Expanding Taiwan-U.S. ties will create a win-win situation for both sides, he said, adding that the letters underscore both the importance of the partnership and its strong foundation.

The ministry thanked Washington for clearly opposing Beijing’s attempts to interfere with Taiwan-U.S. exchanges and for reiterating that expanded ties with Taiwan are consistent with the Taiwan Relations Act. (SFC-E)
