The visit by a cross-party delegation from the Congress of the Republic of Guatemala July 6-10 in Taiwan is sincerely welcomed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
According to the MOFA, the delegation was received by Deputy Foreign Minister Chen Ming-chi at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport. Led by Luis Alberto Contreras Colíndres, president of the Congress, the delegation comprises senior members and chairs of several committees, including Álvaro Enrique Arzú Escobar and Lucrecia Carola Samayoa Reyes.
Contreras said at the airport that the visit underscored the cross-party consensus that underpins support for the country’s long-standing friendship with Taiwan.
Later in the day, Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung hosted a luncheon for the group and said Guatemala has been a robust ally of Taiwan for 92 years. He thanked the Congress and its president for supporting Taiwan’s participation in international organizations and speaking up for Taiwan at numerous global events.
In line with Taiwan’s integrated diplomacy and the policy platform of President Bernardo Arévalo, Lin said the MOFA has implemented various successful Diplomatic Allies Prosperity Projects in Guatemala in agriculture, infrastructure, higher education and public health.
The government will continue to encourage Taiwanese firms to invest in the Central American ally to further strengthen bilateral business links for the benefit of both countries, Lin added.
In response, Contreras thanked the government of Taiwan for enhancing national development, citing projects in public health, information technology development and environmental disaster prevention, as well as for providing scholarships to Guatemalan students.
Taiwan’s transformation into a global high-tech powerhouse is an inspiring example for the global community, he said, adding that Guatemala is committed to working with Taiwan as an ally. (SFC-E)
