Minister of Foreign Affairs Lin Chia-lung hosted a banquet for Reps. Brendan Boyle, Andrea Salinas and Tim Kennedy of the U.S. House of Representatives Oct. 7 in Taipei City, offering them a warm welcome during their Oct. 6-9 trip.

During the event, Lin shared thoughts from his recent visit to Phoenix and thanked the legislators on behalf of the government for supporting Taiwan with concrete actions. He also urged Congress to fast-track negotiations to resolve double taxation issues to create a better environment for business between the two sides.

Faced with constant gray zone coercion from China, the minister said Taiwan will continue to strengthen its self-defense capabilities and promote cooperation between the defense sectors of the U.S. and Taiwan.

Boyle, a native of Philadelphia and a ranking member of the House Budget Committee, spoke of the history of the Declaration of Independence and stressed that democracy and human rights cannot be taken for granted. He said he will continue to stand with the people of Taiwan and those around the world who share the same democratic values.

The three House members will also have an audience with President Lai Ching-te and call on senior officials to exchange views on Taiwan-U.S. relations, trade and technological collaboration and regional security issues during their first visit to Taiwan, the MOFA said, adding that the timing of the visit prior to National Day underscores their unwavering support for Taiwan and the robust bilateral relationship.
