The visit of U.S. Senator Tammy Duckworth to Taiwan is deeply welcomed by the government and people, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said July 6.
According to the MOFA, the senator’s schedule includes meetings with President Lai Ching-te and other high-level officials. They will discuss issues spanning the Taiwan-U.S. relationship; regional security; economic, technology and trade cooperation; and cross-strait and Indo-Pacific developments, the ministry said.
Duckworth is a member of the Senate Taiwan Caucus and a long-standing supporter of Taiwan-U.S. partnership, the MOFA said. She staunchly supports pro-Taiwan resolutions and has signed numerous joint letters backing Taiwan, the ministry noted, adding that she boarded a military flight to Taiwan to announce a U.S. donation of COVID-19 vaccines during the peak of the pandemic.
This year marks the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence and the 30th anniversary of Taiwan’s first direct presidential election, the MOFA said. Duckworth, together with other bipartisan senators, proposed a resolution affirming Taiwan’s democratic achievements and reaffirming U.S. commitment to Taiwan’s security based on the Taiwan Relations Act and Six Assurances. She also introduced the STAND with Taiwan Act with Sen. Dan Sullivan to deter China’s aggression against Taiwan through severe sanctions, the ministry added.
Illinois State Treasurer Michael Frerichs and State Senator Paul Faraci will also participate in parts of the itinerary to strengthen Taiwan’s links at the U.S. local level.
The MOFA will continue cooperating with the U.S. Congress, administrative departments and friends from all sectors in the face of challenges such as authoritarian expansion, gray-zone threats and economic coercion, the ministry said. It will also steadily advance comprehensive Taiwan-U.S. partnerships in the areas of the economy, security, technology and trade while jointly fostering regional peace, stability and prosperity, the ministry added.
