Deputy Minister of the Ocean Affairs Council Sung Chen-en received a delegation led by Joshua Burgin, founder of the Alliance for Global Security, May 13 in Kaohsiung City.
According to the OAC, Sung said Taiwan is in a pivotal location in the first island chain and continues to face cognitive warfare and other hybrid gray-zone tactics from China.
Beijing’s continuous coast guard patrol, maritime exercises and expanding law enforcement in the Taiwan Strait, as well as constant legal warfare and political propaganda, all aim to create the false narrative that it has jurisdiction over Taiwan.
Such actions have brought about great challenges to regional stability and the international maritime order, Sung said, adding that Taiwan hopes to expand cooperation with global partners such as the AGS to safeguard peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific.
Burgin said that the visiting delegates, hailing from the U.S., France and other European countries, are experts in areas such as national defense and security, maritime industries, cybersecurity, aviation and investment. They are especially interested in how Taiwan combines maritime patrol and law enforcement and technological surveillance and cross-ministerial coordination to build 24-hour maritime response capabilities.
In response to a question by Burgin about how the global community can better comprehend Taiwan, Sung said it is important for the world to understand how seriously Taiwan takes its current situation.
The deputy minister emphasized that Taiwan has never backed down in the face of authoritarian expansionism and gray-zone threats. Beginning with the Whole-of-Society Defense Resilience Committee launched by President Lai Ching-te, Taiwan is enhancing its resilience step by step to ensure that society will continue to function amid risks, he added.
The OAC said the two sides exchanged views on a wide range of issues, including maritime cooperation in the Indo-Pacific, crime prevention, resilience policy, and protection of submarine cables and other key infrastructure. (SFC-E)
