Premier Cho Jung-tai met Marie-Louise Hannan, head of the Canadian Trade Office in Taipei (CTOT), May 25 in the capital and anticipated deepening ties with Canada to facilitate more comprehensive exchange.

The premier noted that Taiwan and Canada share the values of democracy, respect for human rights and the rule of law, adding that over recent years activity has included cooperation in education and industry as well as reciprocal visits between local government bodies.

Citing an Investment Promotion and Protection Arrangement that the two sides signed in 2023, Cho looked forward to a trade cooperation framework agreement to further expand business opportunities, the Executive Yuan said.

Cho voiced sincere appreciation for action by Canada that has supported the maintenance of cross-strait peace, including Canadian naval vessels transversing the Taiwan Strait multiple times to uphold the international principle of freedom of navigation. Canada and like-minded partners have also released joint statements in bilateral or multilateral contexts to support cross-strait stability.

The premier looked forward to further collaboration with Canada in key technology including accelerating artificial intelligence applications and development, as well as defense industry cooperation including on drone supply chains.

In response, Hannan, who has returned to Taiwan to become CTOT representative for the second time, noted that this year marked the body’s 40th anniversary and that strong bilateral partnerships are evidenced by actions including a memorandum of understanding on dark vessel detection and a Global Cooperation Training Framework workshop on transnational repression that Taiwan and Canada will host in June.
