President Lai Ching-te said that Taiwan will continue to work with Europe to forge stronger supply chains and jointly contribute to global prosperity and sustainability.
Lai made the remarks at the 2026 EU Investment Forum Sept. 1 in Taipei City. The Presidential Office said that Lutz Güllner, head of the European Economic and Trade Office, was also present at the event.
In his speech, Lai noted closer economic and trade exchange between Taiwan and the European Union, citing nearly US$75 billion in bilateral trade volume in 2025. He added that over the past decade, investment from Taiwanese enterprises in the EU rose by 650 percent compared to the previous ten years, and mentioned Taipei City-headquartered Taiwan Electrical and Electronic Manufacturers’ Association’s recently announced project to build a technology park in Poland, which would facilitate more local companies to invest in the EU countries.
The president also brought up SEMICON Taiwan 2026, scheduled for Sept. 2-4, which he indicated would enable global semiconductor businesses to collaboratively explore business opportunities in advanced packaging and artificial intelligence chips.
Taiwan has a highly integrated semiconductor ecosystem, Lai said, adding that Europe specializes in equipment, materials, research and high value-added manufacturing. He looked forward to making agreements with the EU to avoid double taxation and increase investment protection to stimulate industry collaboration. (POC-E)
