President Lai Ching-te pledged continued promotion of holistic care, smart medicine, talent cultivation and improvement to the work environment to forge a resilient and sustainable medical system.

According to the Presidential Office, Lai spoke at the 2026 Annual Meeting & International Joint Surgical Conference of the Taiwan Surgical Association April 25 in Taipei City.

In remarks at the event’s opening ceremony, the president noted that combined efforts across the medical sector have developed world-class medical standards in Taiwan. He added that this year’s gathering demonstrated dedication to public health on the national and international levels and discussed the Healthy Taiwan Promotion Committee, which was launched soon after he took office.

The president said that the government has raised the national health insurance’s budget, with this year’s sum exceeding NT$1 trillion (US$31.8 billion) for the first time. The increase aims to improve salaries for medical personnel, upgrade equipment and nurturing professionals, the PO said.

Lai pointed out that a total of NT$48.9 billion has been allocated for the five-year Healthy Taiwan Cultivation Plan to support the implementation of holistic care at all levels. He said that the central government would help front-line health professionals address setbacks to enhance overall service quality.

In the era of artificial intelligence, it is vital for all sectors to propel digital transition as the government has through the Ten Major AI Infrastructure Projects, Lai said, citing a project advancing medical data standardization. (POC-E)
