President Lai Ching-te met with the Kingdom of Eswatini Queen Mother Ntombi Tfwala, visited the new International Convention Centre and attended a state banquet May 3, the Presidential Office stated.

During a meeting with the Queen Mother, Lai noted that the official visit enabled him to gain deeper insight into the country’s landscape and culture. Lai noted that it was ten years since the last visit by the Queen Mother to Taiwan and warmly invited her to visit again.

The state visit to ally Eswatini included inspection of the newly inaugurated International Convention Centre in Ezulwini Valley by Lai, Minister of Foreign Affairs Lin Chia-lung, Eswatini King Mswati III and Eswatini cabinet members. At a banquet hosted by the king at the ICC, Lai noted that a joint communique with the king was signed, as was a customs arrangement between Lin and counterpart Pholile Shakantu, to facilitate further bilateral cooperation.

The president stated that Eswatini has made considerable progress under the ruling monarch’s 40-year reign and anticipated further collaboration on prosperity for both nations. Lai also thanked the king for speaking in support of Taiwan in various international contexts. In response, the king said that despite the United Nations emphasis on “leaving no one behind,” Taiwan is still excluded from the body and urged the U.N. to consider Taiwan’s participation as a catalyst to positive international development contributions.

The king thanked Taiwan for assisting Eswatini in infrastructure development including agricultural, electricity grid and water supply systems, adding that Taiwan helped establish the new ICC.

The king anticipated the introduction of high-tech manufacturing, semiconductors and tourism to the country to deepen bilateral partnership in these internationally competitive sectors in which Taiwan excels. (POC-E)
