President Lai Ching-te said May 27 that Taiwan is committed to deepening economic and trade cooperation with the U.S. to jointly foster global prosperity.

Lai made the remarks at an event in Taipei City organized by the American Institute in Taiwan to celebrate 250 years since the founding of the U.S. He wished U.S. citizens a happy anniversary, adding that this year also marks the 30th year of Taiwan’s first direct presidential election.

Taiwan and the U.S. enjoy a close friendship based on the shared values of freedom and democracy, Lai said, expressing hope of continuing to strengthen bilateral collaboration in accordance with the Taiwan Relations Act and Six Assurances.

The president thanked AIT Director Raymond Greene for detailing the fruitful results of Taiwan-U.S. cooperative projects in earlier remarks. He stressed that Taiwan is committed to maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait and opposes any attempt to alter the status quo through force or coercion, given the issue’s importance to global security and prosperity.

Continuing strong economic and trade cooperation is critical in the artificial intelligence era, Lai said, adding that Taiwan is the U.S.’ fourth-largest trading partner and the U.S. became Taiwan’s largest trading partner in the first quarter. Twenty-five U.S. states and Guam have established economic and trade offices in Taiwan, the president noted, anticipating that the two sides will deepen the bilateral relationship through mechanisms such as the U.S.-Taiwan Initiative on 21st Century Trade, the Joint Statement on the Pax Silica Declaration and U.S.-Taiwan Cooperation on Economic Security, as well as the Taiwan-U.S. Economic Prosperity Partnership Dialogue.

Lai concluded by presenting Greene with several gifts, including an autobiography of Morris Chang, founder of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. He asked Greene to forward the book to U.S. President Donald Trump and said he hoped it would help deepen understanding of Taiwan’s semiconductor industry and further promote Taiwan-U.S. cooperation in the AI and semiconductor sectors.
