President Lai Ching-te conferred the Order of Propitious Clouds with Special Grand Cordon on Czech Senate President Miloš Vystrčil June 2 in recognition of his staunch support for Taiwan, contributions to bilateral relations and defense of global democracy.
During a ceremony at the Presidential Office in Taipei City, Lai said that in 2020 the senate president stood undeterred by pressure from China and remained steadfast in visiting Taiwan. His declaration of “I am a Taiwanese” in his address to the Legislative Yuan deeply moved the people, the president added.
Lai said Taiwan-Czechia relations have continuously deepened in recent years, especially in culture, the economy, education, technology and trade. He cited as evidence the direct flights between Taipei and Prague launched in 2023, the joint semiconductor research and development center to enhance talent development, and Taiwanese firms’ active participation in Czechia’s plan to build an artificial intelligence gigafactory for the EU.
The president anticipated Taiwan and Czechia would continue to stand on the side of freedom and democracy and contribute more to global peace, stability and prosperity.
In response, Vystrčil said the honor should be seen as recognition and commendation of the Czech Senate for supporting his Taiwan visits and expanded bilateral ties. For Czech senators, such decisions often require immense political courage, he added.
As the rule of law and fundamental freedoms are being gradually eroded and power unconstrained by laws and rules is becoming increasingly prominent, the Senate president called on democratic nations to support each other to enhance national resilience and resist these trends. (SFC-E)
