President Lai Ching-te conferred the Order of Brilliant Star with Grand Cordon to French Office in Taipei Director Franck Paris July 15 for his advancement of Taiwan-France relations.

According to the president, since taking office in 2023, the director has raised two-way ties to new heights. Lai noted that amidst his busy schedule, Paris also learnt Mandarin to deepen his understanding of local society, adding that this dedication was deeply touching.

Lai said bilateral ties achieved new milestones during Paris’ tenure as head of the FOT, citing the visit to France by former President Tsai Ing-wen in October 2024. He further referenced French government support for Taiwan and regional peace in the language of the recent joint statement by the leaders of Japan and France as well as the G7 Leaders’ Joint Statement.

The president said Taiwan looks forward to a key partner role in France’s drive for strategic autonomy and reindustrialization. The solid foundation laid by Paris will lead to ever-closer relations, he anticipated.

In response, Paris said he was extremely grateful to receive the state honor and attributed it to FOT teamwork. He also thanked the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for its long-term support, working to implement cooperative initiatives.

In addition to progress in cultural and industrial cooperation, Paris noted that bilateral exchanges in political affairs have also been on the rise, as evidenced by the recent visits by the heads of Taiwan’s National Science and Technology Council, the Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of Economic Affairs.

France will maintain its unwavering support for Taiwan, he said, adding that the two will continue their complementary partnerships in areas including space technology, information security and quantum technology. (SFC-E)
