President Lai Ching-te conferred the Order of Brilliant Star with Grand Cordon on Keiji Furuya, Japanese Diet member representing Gifu prefecture and chair of Japan-Taiwan Diet Members’ Consultative Council, July 27 at the Presidential Office in Taipei City.
Prominent guests at the ceremony included Junji Kato, mayor of Gifu’s Toki City, and Masashi Mizobuchi, deputy representative at the Japan-Taiwan Exchange Association’s Taipei Office, the PO said.
In his remarks, Lai thanked Furuya for his efforts to deepen Taiwan-Japan ties, including arranging the first exhibition of National Palace Museum artifacts in Japan and advocating for Japan’s legislature to support Taiwan’s international participation.
The president highlighted Taiwan and Japan’s close work in key industries and technological sectors, citing the start of production at Japan Advanced Semiconductor Manufacturing, Inc., a joint venture with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., in Kumamoto prefecture in December 2024. He added that he looks forward to joining forces with Gifu to forge a more resilient and trustworthy supply chain given the central Japanese prefecture’s role as an industrial hub specializing in aeronautics, automobiles and precision manufacturing.
In response, Furuya said the Japan-ROC Diet Members’ Consultative Council was renamed the Japan-Taiwan Diet Members’ Consultative Council in June this year after five decades. The official inclusion of “Taiwan” in the group’s name reflects the deep bond and mutual trust between the two sides, he said, pledging to continue advancing bilateral exchanges.
Furuya added that Taiwan’s strengths in artificial intelligence, robotics and semiconductors make it an indispensable partner in the Indo-Pacific. As like-minded partners sharing common values, Japan and Taiwan can deepen cooperation to diversify risks and strengthen economic security, he concluded. (POC-E)
