President Lai Ching-te said July 1 that Taiwan is committed to deepening cooperation with the Marshall Islands and jointly enhancing economic resilience in the face of challenges such as rapidly changing international landscapes and the restructuring of global supply chains.

Lai made the remarks when meeting with Marshall Islands Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Kalani R. Kaneko at the Presidential Office in Taipei City. He thanked Kaneko for his longstanding support of bilateral exchanges and Taiwan’s international participation.

Taiwan and the Marshall Islands are bonded by Austronesian culture and share universal values of freedom, democracy and respect for human rights, Lai said, adding that the allies enjoy collaboration in areas spanning agriculture, climate change adaptation, education, medical care, public health and women’s empowerment. He further noted a business and trade delegation led by Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung visited the ally in April to boost bilateral industrial exchanges.

The president expressed condolences to the government and people of the Marshall Islands for a fire that occurred on Ebeye Island last month, adding that in addition to assisting in post-disaster reconstruction, Taiwan is willing to work with the ally to strengthen disaster prevention and resilience. He concluded by saying that as the Pacific Islands Forum is set to take place in August in Palau, Taiwan will contribute more to regional peace and prosperity with the support of the Marshall Islands and other like-minded partners.

In response, Kaneko said this year marks the 28th anniversary of the two countries’ diplomatic relations. Taiwan’s support is invaluable to the Marshall Island’s national development and its people’s welfare, especially in the fields of climate resilience, economic development, education and healthcare, he added. The minister further thanked Taiwan for providing educational opportunities for Marshallese youth and offering medical treatment for Marshallese citizens.

The foreign and trade minister said the Marshall Islands will continue to firmly support Taiwan’s meaningful participation in the U.N. specialized agencies and other regional and international organizations. It also calls upon the U.N. to take immediate action to rectify the situation in which the 23.6 million people of Taiwan are unreasonably excluded from U.N. mechanisms and activities, he added.
