President Lai Ching-te said Aug. 19 that the government is committed to advancing key net-zero technologies and to linking resources across all sectors to help turn research into solutions for industries and contribute to a global net-zero transformation.

Lai made the remarks while attending the 2026 Net Zero Tech International Contest Award Ceremony and Networking Dinner in Taipei City. He first congratulated all the winning teams from among over 200 entries from 20 countries.

To reach Taiwan’s 2050 net-zero goals Lai noted that new materials, energy systems and production methods were necessary to improve the performance and energy efficiency demanded by increased artificial intelligence technology requirements. He added that the National Climate Change Committee, established in 2024, included government and industry leaders, civil society groups, academics and experts who all contribute to discussion of Taiwan’s climate governance, energy transformation and net-zero paths.

According to Lai, the 2025 beta version of the country’s Nationally Determined Contributions 3.0 completed the Comprehensive Carbon Reduction Action Plan. It set a new target of 2035 emissions to be cut by 38 percent, plus or minus 2 percent, from 2005 levels, demonstrating determination to contribute to a global sustainability transition.

Taiwan has the advantage of complete industry clusters in semiconductors, information and communications technology and precision manufacturing, as well as strong research capabilities and robust supply chains, enabling the country to develop globally competitive net-zero technologies, the president stated.

Lai concluded by encouraging participants to maintain relationships with partners from different countries and fields to work together on developing new technology and address climate challenges. (YCH-E)
