President Lai Ching-te said Jan. 15 that Taiwan is committed to expanding cooperation with Japan across the board and jointly maintaining peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific.
Lai made the remarks while receiving a Japanese delegation led by Katsunobu Kato, member of the House of Representatives and former chief cabinet secretary, at the Presidential Office in Taipei City. He thanked Kato for his role in providing COVID-19 vaccines to Taiwan during his term as chief cabinet secretary.
The president spoke approvingly of Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s decision to increase investment in 17 strategic sectors, noting its similarity to the Five Trusted Industry Sectors initiative that he rolled out after his inauguration. He said a digital trade cooperation agreement and a memorandum of understanding regarding regional customs signed by the two sides last December further demonstrate that Taiwan and Japan have additional potential for collaboration in areas spanning economic security, high-tech industries and regional security.
Lai also thanked Takaichi for emphasizing the importance of cross-strait peace and stability in the international arena in the face of China’s ongoing authoritarian expansion.
In response, Kato shared that Takaichi had held a dialogue on economic and disaster prevention cooperation with Lin Hsin-i, Lai’s special envoy to the 2025 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Economic Leaders’ Meeting. Taiwan and Japan share similar values and enjoy a close relationship in economy, trade and people-to-people exchanges, he noted, citing Taiwan’s assistance in several of Japan’s recent earthquakes and the launch of mass production at Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co.’s chip fab in Kumamoto.
The former chief cabinet secretary anticipated deepening bilateral collaboration in the fields of investment, personnel exchanges, public health and supply chain resilience, among others. He thanked Taiwan for backing the World Expo 2025 and spoke hopefully of continued support for the World Horticultural Exhibition set to be held in Yokohama next year. (YCH-E)
