President Lai Ching-te hoped to see further expansion of industrial cooperation with Kanagawa prefecture in Japan to build a safer, more resilient democratic supply chain.
Lai made the remarks while receiving a 60-member contingent led by Kenji Nakanishi, a member of Japan’s House of Representatives and chair of the Kanagawa prefecture Japan-Taiwan Friendship Association, Sept. 7 at the Presidential Office in Taipei City.
The president said that this year marked the association’s 60th anniversary and expressed gratitude for the important role it has played in deepening Taiwan-Japan relations by hosting events and paying visits. Lai also thanked the association for multiple fundraisers in the past to assist Taiwan with earthquake relief efforts.
The president further indicated that Taiwan and Japan are major economic and trade partners, noting that Taiwan’s 2025 trade volume with Japan reached US$84.85 billion and supported an ever-closer exchange in information and communications technology, as well as mechanical components.
Hsinchu City-headquartered Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. has established a design center in Kanagawa, a major hub of Japan’s advanced manufacturing and high-tech industry, Lai said. He added that another 13 Taiwanese enterprises like Kaohsiung City-based Advanced Semiconductor Engineering Inc. have also begun operations in the prefecture, while 78 Kanagawa-based corporations such as Nissan Motor Co. have invested in Taiwan.
In response, Nakanishi pointed out that after the July 28 earthquake in Kumamoto prefecture, Taiwan provided considerable support, appreciated by Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi. Given that Japan and Taiwan are both prone to natural disasters, the chair said, the two sides must continue to reinforce cooperation in disaster prevention.
Nakanishi also lauded the close bilateral links by referring to TSMC’s additional investment in Kumamoto, which has broadly stimulated the prefecture’s economy. (POC-E)
