President Lai Ching-te said he looks forward to deepening ties with Germany in the defense industry, disaster prevention, information security and societal resilience, according to the Presidential Office.
Lai made the remarks while receiving a cross-party Bundestag delegation led by Till Steffen, chair of the German-Taiwan Parliamentary Friendship Group, May 26 at the PO in Taipei City. Other prominent attendees included the group’s vice chairs Markus Reichel and Mandy Eißing, as well as Bundestag members Klaus-Peter Willsch and Rainer Kraft, the PO said.
Speaking at the meeting, the president noted that Taiwan and Germany both cherish the values of democracy, freedom and respect for the rule of law. He thanked the German government and Bundestag for supporting Taiwan, citing German naval vessels’ traverse of the Taiwan Strait in September 2024 to uphold the freedom of navigation and the friendship group’s repeated backing of Taiwan’s international participation.
Lai pointed out that in recent years Taiwan and Germany have continued to expand economic, technological and trade ties, as evidenced by Hsinchu City-headquartered Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co.’s investment in the German city of Dresden, which marked a major milestone in bilateral industrial collaboration.
In response, Steffen said that the German government and Bundestag’s stance toward Taiwan remains unchanged and emphasized that the two sides must strengthen exchanges to jointly address threats from authoritarian regimes. He anticipated further collaboration across a variety of fields, the PO concluded. (POC-E)
