President Lai Ching-te said he looks forward to deepening Taiwan’s partnership with Israel through expanded exchanges and diversified cooperation to contribute more to the international community.

Lai made the remarks while receiving a five-member Israeli delegation led by Mickey Levy, Knesset member and former speaker, May 5 at the Presidential Office in Taipei City. Prominent delegates included Boaz Toporovsky, Knesset member and chair of the Israel-Taiwan parliamentary friendship group, according to the PO.

In his remarks, the president first thanked Levy and Toporovsky for their support of Taiwan’s international participation. He praised Israel’s rich experience in civil defense mobilization, emergency response and medical treatment during conflicts, as well as the resilience and unity of its society.

Lai said Taiwan hopes to expand cooperation with Israel and other like-minded partners in digital development, combating transnational crime and advancing sustainability. He added that Taiwan and Israel signed two memorandums of understanding last year on intellectual property cooperation and a patent prosecution highway to facilitate reciprocal industrial development.

Noting Israel’s strengths in artificial intelligence research and development and Taiwan’s promotion of the Ten Major AI Infrastructure Projects, Lai said the two sides can jointly address challenges posed by the AI era. He added that such cooperation would help strengthen supply chain resilience.

In response, Levy said the purpose of the visit is to demonstrate Israel’s close ties with Taiwan, noting that Taiwan was among the first countries to express support for Israel following the Oct. 7, 2023, attack by Hamas. He also expressed hope of further advancing bilateral economic, security and technology cooperation.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Deputy Foreign Minister François Chih-chung Wu hosted a reception for the delegation a day earlier. He thanked the visitors for their strong support for Taiwan-Israel relations.

The ministry said Taiwan and Israel have expanded cooperation in areas including academic exchange, agriculture and health in recent years, signing more than 36 agreements and MOUs. (POC-E)
