The two leaders have signed a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Agreement
Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Iranian counterpart Masoud Pezeshkian on Friday signed a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Agreement in Moscow, according to the Kremlin.
The two leaders have said that the landmark document, which will cover numerous areas ranging from defense and energy cooperation to culture and science, will give a new impetus to bilateral ties.
The new document is intended to replace the current agreement on the foundations of relations and principles of cooperation between Moscow and Tehran that was signed back in 2001. Work on the new agreement had been underway since 2022, and in June last year the sides said they had approved it.
Putin and Pezeshkian also addressed burgeoning cooperation in the nuclear sphere, particularly regarding the expansion of the Bushehr nuclear power plant, as well as the current state of international affairs, including in the Middle East.
Putin has already met Pezeshkian twice, who was sworn into office last summer, with the most recent meeting at the BRICS summit in Kazan in late October.
