The National Development Council opened a larger Startup Island Taiwan office in Tokyo Aug. 20 to better support Taiwanese firms interested in tapping the Japanese market.

According to the NDC, more than 100 guests and business executives from Taiwan and throughout Japan attended the inauguration ceremony.

NDC Minister Yeh Chun-hsien said the original Tokyo location provided Taiwanese startups access to workspace and event venues and served as a hub that connected them with the industries, capital market and innovation ecosystem in Japan.

Given the increasing exchanges in innovation between Taiwan and Japan since the office opened two years ago, a decision was made to move the office to a new location to provide more comprehensive support to the increasing number of Taiwanese firms seeking to expand their reach to Japan, he added.

Located in Shibadaimon in the greater Tokyo area, the new office is double the size of the original and can accommodate triple the number of firms needing workspace, as well as host activities for around 100 people, the council said.

In addition to providing professional consultation and services to local startups, the office will also work to help Japanese startups and businesses better understand Taiwan and expand their reach to the country, the NDC added. (SFC-E)
