Taiwan and Canada celebrate quarter century of science and technology cooperation

While receiving a Canadian delegation, Premier Chen Chien-jen said international cooperation is indispensable in the promotion of scientific and research development, Sept. 25 in Taipei.

The delegation, led by the National Research Council of Canada, comprises representatives from industry, government and academia, is scheduled to attend two forums Sept. 26, one on Artificial Intelligence and 3D technology and another on Novel Biologic. On Sept. 26-27 it will attend a forum on Earthquake Engineering.

Chen expressed his gratitude to the NRC for its long-term cooperation with academia and research organizations and looked forward to deepening two-way ties, especially in technological innovation. To this end, the group will meet with heads of major scientific research institutions, including the National Science and Technology Council.

Previous bilateral scientific and technological research cooperation mainly focused on biomedicine and nanotechnology, the premier said. This year sees a wider range of interchange between the two sides as embodied by the forums.

Prior to the visit to the Executive Yuan, the delegation attended a ceremony celebrating the 25th anniversary of Taiwan-Canada partnership, at which the Canadian Trade Office in Taipei and Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Canada renewed a memorandum of understanding on science and technology cooperation.

In other activity, the NSTC signed a memorandum of understanding on cohosting a next generation frontline science symposium with Canadian Institute for Advanced Research. Taiwan’s National Applied Research Laboratories inked a pact with Mitacs, a Canadian nonprofit organization that offers research and training programs in industrial and social innovation. (POC-E)
