The “Taiwan Echoes of Democracy” exhibition is underway in Berlin May 6 through May 16, presenting Taiwan’s evolution to a democratic society that values human rights, according to the Ministry of Culture.
The MOC and the Taipei Representative Office in Germany Cultural Division have collaborated to present film screenings, photography and seminars. The 2025 Golden Horse Award best narrative feature on the White Terror Period (1949-1992) “A Foggy Tale,” forms part of the event.
Other films include the “Price of Democracy” about the grassroots forerunners of democratic movements, “A Chip Odyssey” on the history of Taiwan’s semiconductor development and “Eyes on Democracy” covering key moments in the transition to democracy from 1980 to 2000. The films present democratic progress and societal transformation from a variety of perspectives ranging from civil participation to technology.
The photo exhibit features stills from “Eyes on Democracy” taken by photojournalists including Hsieh San-tai and Pan Hsiao-hsia. Images comprise action taken on the road to achieving democracy and include agricultural workers, students and street protests.
Two seminars, “Taiwan in a Global Democratic Crisis” on May 9 and “From Dictatorship to Democratic Memory” May 16 offer further insight into movement toward democracy. The first is given by Soochow University Political Science Professor Chen Chun-hung online and the latter by Markus Meckel, chair of the Council of the Foundation for the Reappraisal of the SED Dictatorship and focuses on how Germany instigated transitional justice.
The series of events expands understanding of Taiwan’s recent history for a German audience, the TRO in Germany stated. (POC-E)
