Vice Premier Cheng Li-chiun said Aug. 12 that the government will continue to fully support Team Taiwan members who are set to compete in the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games and expressed good wishes for the athletes showcasing their skills at the international sporting event.
Cheng made the remarks while visiting the National Sports Training Center in the southern city of Kaohsiung. The Ministry of Education Sports Administration launched a preparation project for the Paralympic Games last December, with athletes receiving professional training at the NSTC, Cheng said. The center provides tailored meals, high-tech auxiliary equipment and coaches to optimize training regimens.
According to Cheng, the government will also offer services during the event in France, including diet, accommodation, sports training facilities, doctors and physical therapists, as well as data collection and analysis. Cheng further emphasized that the government encourages more physically and mentally challenged individuals to engage in sports, and have the opportunity to choose to become professional athletes.
The vice premier went on to say that a new department of physical education and sports development is in the pipeline. The department will advance athletic skills, promote exercise for all citizens and boost sports industry development, she added.
The Paris 2024 Paralympic Games will take place between Aug. 28 and Sept. 8. A total of 13 Taiwan athletes have qualified for seven sports in the event, including badminton, taekwondo and table tennis, according to the MOE. (YCH-E)
