The 19th Taiwan-India Economic Consultation took place Aug. 28 in Bengaluru, India, and saw the two sides holding in-depth exchanges on global trade development, supply chain resilience, investment strategies and talent cultivation.
According to the Ministry of Economic Affairs, the meeting was convened by Deputy Minister Cynthia Kiang and Amardeep Singh Bhatia, secretary of India’s Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade.
Kiang commended the Indian government for its Make in India and Digital India initiatives, which aim to attract global investment amid geopolitical challenges and the restructuring of global supply chains. Given Taiwan’s strong semiconductors, information communications technology and manufacturing ecosystems, Kiang hoped to see the two sides expand supply chain partnership to leverage their complementary strengths.
In response, Bhatia said the Indian government has been active in promoting policy reform and infrastructure development in recent years to improve India’s business environment for foreign investment. He expressed hope that the two partners will continue to strengthen cooperation, and welcomed the resumption of direct flights between Taipei and New Delhi in December this year to create more trade and investment opportunities.
The MOEA said the two sides also concluded two memorandums of understanding on financial and fintech cooperation, and extended an existing agreement on intellectual property rights cooperation at the meeting.
The day before, the two officials took part in the fifth Taiwan-India CEOs Roundtable on the Indian investment environment and taxation issues, in addition to attending the India-Taiwan Industrial Collaboration Summit, which involved more than 200 business representatives from both sides and focused on sectors such as smart electronics, green and smart technologies and smart auto parts.
