National Development Council Minister Yeh Chun-hsien and Deputy Economic Minister Ho Chin-tsang recently led a delegation to Sapporo to strengthen public- and private-sector cooperation on regional revitalization between Taiwan and Japan, according to the NDC.
The 22-member delegation included young professionals and business representatives engaged in regional revitalization, the council said. The group visited the Former Hokkaido Government Office Building in the morning of July 21, where they were welcomed by Hokkaido Vice Governor Tsuyoshi Mitsuhashi and other officials.
In his remarks, Yeh noted that Taiwan and Japan are undergoing similar demographic transitions, prompting the governments to encourage young people to return to their hometowns. To address societal changes, Taiwan is leveraging interministerial resources to construct support systems for youth, he said, adding that the delegation hoped to learn from Hokkaido’s rich experience to refine Taiwan’s regional revitalization policies.
In response, Mitsuhashi said that in 2024 Taiwanese visitors to the prefecture exceeded 600,000, highlighting the close exchanges between the two sides in culture, trade, tourism and education. He added that he looked forward to further advancing two-way ties.
Later the same day, Yeh and Ho visited Hokkaido University’s Institute for the Promotion of Business-Regional Collaboration to discuss how academic research can be translated into social innovation, while the young delegates visited D&DEPARTMENT HOKKAIDO by 3KG, a company that helped Sapporo develop its official city brand, SAPP‿RO (Sapporo Smile), the council said.
