The Ministry of Foreign Affairs established the World Alliance for Disaster Management Sept. 19 in collaboration with the Ministry of the Interior and the National Fire Agency, underscoring government commitment to expanding Taiwan’s international participation.
The WADM opening ceremony was hosted by President Lai Ching-te and held jointly with the 2026 Resilient Taiwan for Sustainable Democracy International Forum and the International Disaster Education and Action Forum, the MOFA said. Representatives from 21 countries attended the ceremony, the ministry said, adding that officials including Raynold Oilouch, vice president of Palau, and Eswatini’s Deputy Prime Minister Thulisile Dladla were in attendance.
In his remarks, Lai described the establishment of WADM as a breakthrough in Taiwan’s global involvement. He said the association will leverage the country’s disaster prevention and rescue expertise to strengthen transnational cooperation.
Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung and Interior Minister Liu Shyh-fang welcomed overseas delegations with a reception Sept. 18 in Taipei City. At the event Lin said that Taiwan will utilize its advantages in artificial intelligence, communications technology, satellite applications, smart manufacturing and unmanned aerial vehicles to enhance global disaster governance capabilities with international partners.
The MOFA said that visiting delegates will have the opportunity to see the NFA’s training center in Nantou County to gain insight into Taiwan’s capabilities in disaster preparation, prevention, response and professional training. The center is the largest compound disaster training base in Asia and third largest in the world, the ministry added.
WADM is the first intergovernmental organization inaugurated by Taiwan. It is also the third global organization with headquarters in the country, preceded by the Food and Fertilizer Technology Center for the Asian and Pacific Region in 1970 and the World Vegetable Center in 1971. (POC-E)
