Deputy Minister of Environment Hsieh Yein-rui led a delegation to ally Paraguay Sept. 7, underscoring government commitment to strengthening cooperation on climate and environmental governance, according to the Ministry of Environment.
The visit followed a memorandum of understanding on carbon credit cooperation that Taiwan and Paraguay signed in October 2025, which committed to upholding the 2015 United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change Paris Agreement, the MOENV said.
Hsieh met with Ivan Lee, ROC Taiwan ambassador to Paraguay, and with Taiwan interns in Paraguay’s Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development (MADES) on Sept. 7. This year, the MOENV and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs selected ten young people from backgrounds in agriculture, carbon management, green finance and soil and water conservation to join the Taiwan Global Pathfinders Initiative in Paraguay.
The interns briefed Hsieh on their training, including how they leveraged experience to overcome a lack of hydrological monitoring stations in Paraguay. During their internship, they sought to maximize agricultural production and discussed promotion of financial equity with local banks.
The deputy minister lauded their adaptation to a new environment and encouraged them to further observe how the Paraguayan government responds to environmental challenges, the MOENV added.
Taiwan will continue working with Paraguay to promote international cooperation on green transportation, natural carbon sinks, renewable energy and personnel training. (POC-E)
