Minister of Foreign Affairs Lin Chia-lung visited Switzerland’s University of Bern World Trade Institute and offered a Penglai scholarship of CHF80,000 (US$101,272) on behalf of the government.
 
The scholarship was inaugurated in 2020 by Taiwan and the WTI with the aim of educating students from Taiwan, developing and least-developed countries to participate fully in international trade. To date, students from Taiwan, Bangledash, Ethiopia, Lesotho, Nepal and Vietnam have benefited from the scholarship, the MOFA said.
 
Minister Lin was presented with a letter of appreciation for MOFA’s funding of the scholarship by Manfred Elsig, WTI’s managing director. Taiwan representative to the World Trade Organization, Hwang Jau-yuan, Representative of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Switzerland Wang Szu-wei and University of Bern Vice-rector for International and Academic Careers, Andrew Chan were also present, the MOFA said.
 
Lin noted Taiwan plays a key role in the global supply chain and anticipated bilateral cooperation in artificial intelligence and semiconductors with Switzerland. The minister also emphasized the importance of cultivating independent thought and innovative capability to support the international economy, the MOFA added.
 
Chan noted that the University of Bern undertook exchange with National Taiwan University and other academic institutions and looked forward to deepened partnership in academia. Elsig lauded Taiwan contribution to cultivating professionals through the scholarship.
 
WTI is a research institute specializing in economic governance and is closely affiliated with the World Trade Organization, the ministry stated.
