Taiwan and South Korea held a library exchange event Aug. 14 in Busan, underscoring the two sides’ shared commitment to cross-cultural understanding and education.
Attended by Liang Hsueh-cheng, director general of the Ministry of Education’s Department of Lifelong Education, the event involved a book donation ceremony by Taiwan’s National Central Library and the signing of a memorandum of understanding between Taiwan’s National Library of Public Information and South Korea’s Busan Metropolitan Library.
According to the MOE, NCL Acting Director-General Weng Chih-tsung gifted more than 100 books spanning the arts, history, social sciences, nature and Taiwanese literature to BML for its Taiwan Corner. BML Director Euna Park received the books, the ministry said, adding that the donation included both Chinese and English editions of “Taiwan Travelogue,” the winner of the 2026 International Booker Prize.
Weng said that books can connect people from around the world and foster mutual understanding. He added that he hopes South Korean readers learn more about Taiwan through the donated works.
Following the donation, NLPI Director Ma Hsiang-ping and Park signed a cooperative MOU. The origins of the pact can be traced back to the Asia-Pacific Public Library Forum held at NLPI in May, Ma said, adding that she hopes the two libraries will deepen cooperation in reading promotion, lifelong learning, professional exchanges for librarians, resource sharing and international collaboration to address challenges brought about by artificial intelligence and the digital era.
According to the MOE, the event marks a new starting point for bilateral library cooperation and strengthens educational and cultural partnerships between Taiwan and South Korea. (YCH-E)
